Magical/Girl
Connection and Understanding In A Shattered World
A crash like glass.
Dark spirits break through to the human dimension. They will corrupt and destroy until they have broken the world.
Following them are spirits of light and justice, looking for their own hosts to bond with to fight the shadows.
This is the story of one Magical spirit and one human Girl.
This is the story of the Magical Girl.
Magical/Girl is a tabletop roleplaying game for two players about a magical girl trying to stop an other-dimensional evil.
Each player will take on the role of either The Magical or The Girl. The Magical is a spirit of light and justice from the same dimension as the invading evil. The Girl is the human that will host The Magical, and together they will stop the dark Shattered from destroying the world.
However, the path they take is not set. The Magical is powerful, but this game is not about simply attempting to destroy the Shattered. Each Shattered has taken its own human host and possessed them, warping the world around them into a dark, twisted version of itself. With a lot of trying and a little luck, the Magical Girl can forge a connection with the Shattered through its human host and bring them back to the light. Sometimes they won’t get through, and the Shattered will need to be destroyed, but the Magical Girl will never stop trying to find understanding and connection, even in the darkest moments. Magical/Girl is a game about empathy, understanding, and showing compassion to others struggling in the dark. It is also about the toll that brings upon a person, the vulnerability of opening up, the guilt of redeeming people with dark pasts, and the fear of inching ever closer to the darkness ourselves.
A Complete Draft of the game is on my Patreon at the $3 Tier.
The Oblique Engine
The Oblique Engine is my own system framework. Oblique games are made for 2 players, with each taking a complementary role in the pursuit of some shared goal. The Scenes of Oblique Engine games are a series of lines and prompts, one prompt per player per line, with only one player answering their prompt for that line. Occasional dice rolls switch player is “taking the lead” and answering, causing play to take a weaving and diverging path through a plot. Failure to complete the Scene is impossible, with the question being what happens along the way.
With the plots of the games set, Oblique Engine games focus heavily on the interpersonal relationship of their two characters, looking deep inside their heads as they struggle, bond, fight, and experience. These introspective games are highly intimate experiences to share, even on repeat plays.
There are currently two released Oblique Engine games: TITAN/child and Blood/Lust. They offer a preview of the style of gameplay that Magical/Girl refines and perfects.

The Plan For The Future
I made a lot of pretty awesome art for Magical/Girl, but being in full-color makes for a remarkably pricey print run. To put it bluntly, I don’t think I can pull off enough crowdfunding to print the game the way I want it to look. I’m starting to get there! But I want to fund a couple other projects before I get there, likely at least two of Oleander Daemon, Under Forgotten Stars, and Legend of the Elements 2nd Edition.
That said, the game has been in a complete state for nearly two years. I might release it as a PDF first, just to get it out in the world. I haven’t decided, and I don’t have a timeline. But if you want the Draft, get it now, because it might not be there for that long. And it’s worth playing, I really, really like how it came out, especially the latter parts as it all comes to a climax.
